Tip of the day
Cut your kids' hair. A small investment in a good pair of scissors or clipping system, can save you tons of money over the course of a few years. My girlfriends and I would cut each other's hair when teenagers, and I've given friends and family members highlights, dye jobs, and updoes for special events. It really isn't as hard as one might think. Remember that hair "draws up" as it dries. When trimming wet hair go for a little longer than you think you might want, especially for bangs.

I have an advantage in that my hair is more difficult to manage than my (white) family's hair, so that after figuring out my own hair, I find it a cinch to work on theirs. We bought a cheap set of clippers (probably $15) more than 10 years ago. I use that same set to cut my step dad and husband's hair. The way I got started was I sent my husband to a salon to get it cut the way he wanted. Then, I simply looked it over and copied but was able to do a much better job at zero cost.
