Tip of the day

Have a potato that is starting to sprout?  Did you make guacamole for dinner?  Turn those “throw away” items into a science experiment for the kids!  Insert 3-4 toothpicks around the center of the potato or avocado seed and balance those toothpicks on the rim of a cup or glass.  Fill the glass with water so that the bottom part of the seed or potato is submerged.  Place in a sunny window and wait.  The kids will get a kick out of seeing them grow.  We grew many an avocado plant in my youth—too bad we weren’t in the proper climate for them to fruit!  Go here for some photos.
