Tip of the day

Make a point to reach out to your loved ones today.  Give a call to a friend whom you haven’t heard from in a while.  Chat with an elderly widowed neighbor.  Send your love to those you know who have recently lost a loved one.  Write a hand written letter.  Mail a relative a photo.  For me, Valentine’s Day has always been a celebration of all types of love, not just the romantic kind.

Are you feeling lonely this holiday?  Reach out to someone else.  Drop in to a nursing home and ask the staff about visiting a resident who doesn’t have family nearby.  Stop by a homeless shelter with some Valentine’s candy and treats.  Buy a flower bouquet and hand out the individual stems to complete strangers.  If you are affiliated with a House of Worship, ask about members of your community who are homebound and might like a visit.  Research shows that altruism combats, among other things, loneliness.
