Tip of the day

Reminder—from 3/27/10 (observance of Earth Hour) -4/22/10 (observance of Earth Day), I’ll be posting eco-friendly tips for my tips of the day. 

Eat foods that are in season.  It is kind of crazy how few people know what is in season when.  Because we are so accustomed to tomatoes in December and blueberries in March, we have lost touch with what is growing and when it is ripe.  If you do not know where to start, begin by visiting your local farmers markets.  Ask which ones have LOCAL PRODUCE.  I was amazed when I visited farmers markets outside of Knoxville.  Many had produce that they had shipped in from other states, which in my opinion sort of defeats the point. 

Alice Waters and Jamie Oliver both have excellent cookbooks to inspire your fresh from the garden cooking.
