Tip of the day

Respect nature. When hiking or camping, we enjoy looking under rocks or logs to find salamanders, pill bugs, and centipedes. While it is fun to explore nature, be careful to return it as close to its original state as possible. Don't pick the wildflowers. Don't feed the animals. Clean up after yourself and dispose of trash in proper containers so that wildlife is not harmed.

We explain it to our daughter in this way. We are going into someone else's home. How would you feel if someone came over to your house, messed with your stuff, left it out of order, took things of yours, came too close to your babies/favorite toys, acted like they owned your home? Now realize that animals must feel the same way. Only they may not cry or throw a fit, they might try to defend themselves or become aggressive.

Many of you are probably saying to yourselves, "Well, duh!" but others who might not have been exposed to nature as much might find this reminder helpful. Either way, have fun in the great outdoors. Enjoy the beauty of the world around you!
