Tip of the day

Tip from the Expert

Today’s tip comes from Sean O’Connell of Office Furniture Outfitters, a local office furniture supply store, selling both new and used products.  I asked Sean if he would give us some ideas on how to pick a good office chair—what to look for, what to pay attention to.  Here are his “Ergo Tips”:

Choosing a chair: A quality desk chair is optimal for all day comfort and productivity. Many of the "budget" style desk chairs are not designed for sitting in for more than 2-3 hours at a time. These chairs can cause serious discomfort, making it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand. It is very important to try several chairs and choose one that fits your body type. Most multi-function style desk chairs can be adjusted to fit the majority of people.

Seat height: adjust the height of your chair so that your legs bend at a 90 degree angle with your feet flat on the floor (thighs parallel to the floor). If the seat is too high, blood flow is restricted to your legs, causing discomfort. Shorter people should use a foot riser to help alleviate pressure under the thighs.

Move About: do not hesitate to vary your posture. Posture changes are the body's self-defense mechanism against physical stress of the upper limbs as well as sitting for long periods of time. Schedule breaks so you can move from sitting to standing or get up to move around; good blood flow is crucial for mind and body.
