Tip of the day

As part of filling your pantry and building your stockpile, have a few extra items on hand in for all of those last minute things that come up.

  • Ingredients for Rice Krispie treats work well for hospitality tables, bake sales, or fast after school snacks when your children’s friends come over.  No they aren’t the healthiest of foods, but for an every once in a while sweet snack, they are fast, inexpensive, and yummy.
  • Teas and cookies work well for when girlfriends, neighbors, or church friends come over for a quick visit.  Watch when teas go on sale and stock up.  Many teas sold as hot teas also work well as iced tea.  Pick up cookies when you can buy them for free after a coupon.  Or, if you are more industrious, make a few batches of cookies and freeze the dough for your own version of slice and burns bakes.
  • Add make ahead meals to your freezer so that you don’t have to hesitate to invite a friend to stay for supper.  These also work great for when you are too tired to cook a full meal.  You can easily make your own freezer meals by doubling recipes when you are already baking or cooking.  Lasagnas freeze really well.  To shorten your cook time of a frozen lasagna, prep them in 2 loaf pans instead of a 9x13.  You can pull one out when you need a small portion or both when serving a larger crowd.  Soups, stews, and all sorts of casseroles work for this too.  If you aren’t one for cooking, load up on Stouffer or other freezer meals when you catch a sale or have a great coupon.
  • Never underestimate the power of cream cheese and crackers.  You can do all sorts of things with them, and they are very handy when you need to bring something to a potluck, need a fast appetizer for a dinner party, or when you are asked to bring something to a friend’s dinner party.

What are your go-to foods that you are always sure to have on hand?
