Tip of the day—Use a Rubber Spatula

You can always tell the cooks on television who have done without in their lives—they use rubber spatulas and take an extra couple of seconds to make sure the bowl is completely empty.  Cooks like Martha Stewart and Paula Dean make a point to do so, I believe, because they have had experiences which taught them the importance of not wasting what you have.  Make a point to use a rubber spatula when cooking this holiday season to make sure you use every last bit of what you are making.

Of course, there’s also a case for leaving a little bit in the bowl.  My grandmother made me promise when our daughter was just a baby that I’d let her lick the bowl when I was baking. While some recipes have raw egg in them, other foods like biscuits, pudding, or homemade dough are fun for children to enjoy eating off of the spoon.  I can always count on at least one pita’s worth of my pita bread being eaten raw by our daughter when I am making it!
