Target, Glad Force Flex Deal

target frugal mom blogger columbus ohioUPDATE—Correction, they were $8.49 before the 1.00 store coupon. After the coupon, $6.94 for 84. This is still an excellent price and they only go up a penny each making them .08 cents each!  Thanks Robin.

I was going to post this with the stockpiling deals, but I decided that some of you might be running to Target tomorrow.  I wanted you to know about this great deal that Robin, a terrific reader, found for us.  I’ll be making a trip to Target this week for some other things, and I’ll be sure to snag this deal while there:

I went to target today. In the add there is glad force flex 84 ct. garbage bags for 9.99 in the bulk section but, in the grocery section, there is the same one except the handles are different. They are reduced to 7.49. There are .55 cents off instantly on some of them and if you have the flip, clip and save coupon mailer book (target mailer) it has a 1.00 off coupon making them 5.94. That is .07 cents each....a real steal!! Robin

Tip of the day

Save your leftover newspapers.
  • They are good for helping you start a fire.
  • We use them to wash our car windows.
  • I just learned a tip that they are good to line your refrigerator drawers to help easily remove any debris and keep the moisture down.
  • I like to wrap children's presents in the funny papers.
  • They make good packing material.

What do you use your leftover newspapers for?

Earth Fare Deals 1/27-2/23

Food inflation © Tetra Images/Corbis Frugally Farming Family has posted the Earth Fare deals for 1/27-2/23.  Happy Shopping!

End of month report--January

We budget $350 each month.  This includes all groceries, paper products, cleaning supplies, toiletries, medicines/herbals, and hygiene items (razors, deodorant, etc).  Included from now on in our grocery budget will be newspapers.

In January we spent $328.93—We were $21.07 under budget.   There is $43.38 which we haven’t actually spent in the $336.43 amount.  We ordered a case of Sweetwater Valley Farm cheese with a friend and will purchase half of that case.  Since we ordered it before the end of the month, I’m using that amount for the cheese.  With that money we bought $623.20 worth of items.  If I’m doing my math correctly, we had a savings of 52.78%. (This percentage isn’t as good as I normally do, but I was also much more focused on planning for the coupon fair rather than working the moneymaker deals like I normally would have been).

What did we buy with that money?

I purchased 7 newspapers.

Free items—3 ecotrin, 2 quench ($12 MIR) lotions, puffs tissues, 5 free electrosol, 11 free oikos organic yogurts,5 boxes Marcal tissues, thermacare, toothpaste, 2 Gatorade, frozen blueberries, 7 rotel, 4 salsas, and 2 pert plus for men

Bartered for two dozen eggs from a friend of mine who owns chickens

Some of the items listed above  and below were donated to our church food pantry/outreach programs.

What did we stock up on?

  • The main item that we stocked up on was cheese, and because we ordered mid month, we still haven’t received that order.
  • We needed rice, and I bought 9 lbs of white rice and 2 lbs of brown.

Other purchases

  • $14.50 for locally grown using organic measures pastured milk.
  •  At Kroger—bread, 2 mega rolls of charmin, black eyed peas, chips, organic carrots, organic ff milk, vegetable oil, 10 lbs of bread flour (I was going to make sourdough bread, but I let the starter die when we went on a trip.  I’ll use this on other breads instead.), potato flakes, sour cream, parmesan cheese, marshmallows, frozen spinach, eggs, bananas, organic beef, organic salad, dawn dishwashing detergent, cucumbers, sodas, poptarts, cheese, ranch dressing, 4 cornbread mixes, organic apples, crackers, Kashi cereal, 2 bratwurst, hot dogs, 2 mustards
  • At Walgreens—I bought 2 of the coffee creamers anticipating the coffee service at the coupon fair, 2 gatorades, honey, cascade, swiffer dusters, Kraft singles, Oscar Mayer lunchmeat, 2 sugar free candies (for my dad), 4 (24 pack) aquafina water for our water storage, bacon, kotex, kleenex, bread, animal crackers
  • Ingles—organic apples, organic potatoes, whole wheat hot dog buns, and 2 liter sodas (I never made it to the triple coupon week because of the snow.  Oh well!)
  • At Three Rivers Market— organic spinach salad, organic carrots, organic onions, 6 organic lemons
  • From Frontier co-op—Stash earl grey tea, Stash orange spice tea, Emergen-c, Tom's of Maine silly strawberry toothpaste, 3 vitamin bottles for our daughter, 3 organic ranch dip mixes Simply Organic brand
  • Earth Fare—1 organic mango (needed a purchase to get the free blueberries) We so enjoyed this mango!

So, what could you glean from this post to help with your budget and shopping?

  • Last month, I analyzed our spending and realized we had not bought as many organic items as we normally would have. Therefore this month, I tried to pick up a few more of those items. Keeping a list of what we buy and how much we purchase helps for an analysis of trends.
  • Having home canned and preserved items in the freezer helps to keep our costs down in the winter.  We’ve been enjoying canned peaches and pears, homemade strawberry jam and pickles, and frozen blueberries and strawberries.
  • The onions, herbs, and few other things in the garden have kept our costs down.  I used the last of the storage onions for Christmas dinner so I was pleased to see the sale on the organic version at Three Rivers Market this month.  Knowing how much we preserved and how soon we ran out of the items helps me to plan for this next season’s garden.
  • When you get busy, you might not coupon as much.  When you aren’t couponing, you can still use money saving strategies to help with the budget.  BS01178_1Looking for loss leaders and mark downs, comparing prices, watching for sales, barter when you can, go in on bulk purchases with friends—all of those tools will help keep your spending down.

I hope this post helps some of you in your grocery shopping, budgeting and meal planning.

Reminder—Coupon Fair Rescheduled

It is a winter wonderland outside my window, and I thought it a good idea to remind everyone that we’ve rescheduled the coupon fair.

Our reschedule date is Saturday, February 27th from 9am-12n.  Almost all of the booth representatives are still planning on being present for the fair, so you’re still in for a treat on the reschedule date.  Please mark your calendars and plan on attending the fair on the 27th.  We look forward to seeing you then!  Please contact me at couponingincriticaltimes@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Tip of the day

Today’s tip of the day comes from Mary Hunt of Debt Proof Living (my husband calls her the female Dave Ramsey).  Go here to read more.

UPDATE--Well, bummer!  The tip from yesterday didn’t show up on the link.  She was talking about the two ways to bring down your debt—reducing spending and increasing your income.  I encourage you to check out her website and see what she offers there.

Co-op Advantage Stores/Three Rivers Market February Sale and Match-ups

UPDATE—I’ve updated the list of coupons below. New coupons have an asterisk beside them.

imageI’m posting this a bit early.  Our local co-op, Three Rivers Market allows customers to shop the stores in the last 3 days of the month and shop both the current and upcoming month’s sales.

I don’t usually post the coupons until the first of the month because printable coupon sites refresh their coupons at that time.  Last month, I posted early and it seemed to be popular among readers.  The benefit is that you can go on and print coupons that might not be available after the first of the month.  Please let me know if you catch any that I haven’t updated or find any new coupons I haven’t mentioned.

There are Co-op Advantage Stores located in 12 states with 44 stores. Our local Co-op Advantage store is Three Rivers Market (or TRM as I often abbreviate it). If you are outside of the Knoxville area, go to this link and look on the last page to see if there is a store located near you.

PrintThree Rivers Market is a cooperatively-owned natural foods grocery store serving the Knoxville community and all of East Tennessee. They offer many certified organic foods, as well as fresh produce and offerings from our many local growers and producers. You'll find more than 200 herbs and spices, a large bulk buying section, freshly prepared deli foods, as well as refrigerated, frozen, and packaged groceries.

Their sales ad is good all through February.   Please post any additional deals you find in the comments section.

Also note that Cascadian Farm has information on the sales flyer about how you can enter for a chance to win a trip to Cascadian Farm when you buy 5 Cascadian Farms or Muir Glen products.

The Knoxville Coupon Fair Rescheduled

I just spoke with my friend Julya Johnson (meteorologist/weather guru). She said that the weather will definitely be bad.

Look around the store.

  • I needed Gatorade and was shopping at Walgreens.  I looked where the Gatorade is stocked by the sodas, and it was $1.99 per container.  I looked in the refrigerated drink section and there were some on clearance for $1 each.
  • At Kroger, some of the organic milks are stored in the organic/health foods section.  Some are stored in with the other milks.  Do a price comparison.  Look for marked down milks in both sections.
  • Often stores will put certain items on the end caps or in the “sale” section or aisle.  This does not necessarily mean that they are the best prices.  Instead, look on the aisles where the other brands of the same item are stored to price compare.

Honest Tea Coupon

As y’all know, I’m pretty darn Southern.  I like tea, and I don’t like to pay for tea from the store.  One of the exceptions is to get a special treat at Three Rivers Market with our daughter every now and again.  We whiz in and pick up a macaroon and a jar of Honest Tea.  YUM!  I was happy to see that Thrifty Mama reports the coupons have been reset, making our special treat even sweeter!

The Honest Tea Coupons that I posted about previously have reset HERE! You can print two copies of each coupon.

Free Scholastic book from Pampers

We love free in our household, especially free books. I’m beginning to think that our daughter will grow up thinking that everything we get is free.  Hmmm, I’m not sure that is a terrible thing… I digress.

I was happy to see this post from Common Sense with Money about a free book available through Pampers and Scholastic.  Since we have some of these in our stockpile of gifts, I’ll be sure to sign up for the mail in offer.

If you haven’t yet signed your children up for the Imagination Library, check out my post here for more details.
