Tip of the day—Juice

Our family rarely buys juice, and there are a few reasons for this. 

  • I have heard for years about how juice and sodas can damage children’s teeth.  When our daughter first saw the dentist before he even looked in her mouth he asked what she drank.  When I told her “water, milk, and every once in a while ginger tea” he said to keep that up for the health of her teeth. 
  • Eliminating juice saves money.  I grew up in a household where we always had orange juice in the fridge.  When I grew older, I realized how much that cost per week.
  • Eating the whole fruit instead of just juice gives you the benefit of the fiber, too. 

When we do buy juice it is usually a special occasion—a celebratory brunch or we have guests staying overnight.  On those occasions I try to save as much money as we can.  Here are some ways to do that:

  • Frozen juice costs less because you aren’t paying someone for their water.  I’ve read some research about how it packs a higher vitamin punch because the vitamins have not oxidized from the juice while it is frozen.  Many juices in the refrigerator section say “from concentrate”.  Since the frozen juice is the “concentrate” by eliminating the middle man who mixes it with water for you, you are saving a few bucks.
  • Do you know what the difference in “lite” or “50% less calorie” juice and regular juice is?  Water!  Add your own and save some money.  Instead of adding 3 cans of water to our frozen juice, I usually add 4.
  • Use coupons.  Sometimes juice in the refrigerated section is cheaper if you have a really great coupon.  If you know that you need juice, plan ahead, watch for sales, and use coupons with the sales when you can.
