The tips of the day now through Earth Day are focusing on environmental stewardship.
Ask questions when you shop. Where are the products made? What kind of company are you purchasing from? Is the store a “green business”? Is this available as a recycled product? How were the materials harvested?
Also ask questions of yourself. Do I really need this? How long will this last? Does this purchase fit into my budget?
Two of the more powerful resources for understanding consumerism as it relates to environmental stewardship were The Story of Stuff and the book Cheap, The High Cost of Discount Culture. If you haven’t watched or read either, I encourage you to give them a look.
